The
Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory offers all graduate students
interested in Women's Studies and working in a relevant disciplinary area
an opportunity to do interdisciplinary theoretical work that will enhance
their departmentally based research, as well as a way to receive special
recognition for their Women's Studies work.
Acceptance
into the Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory program requires admission
to a Binghamton University graduate program and approval of the student's
application by the Women's Studies Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory
committee.
Undergraduate
level work in Women's or Feminist Studies is not required for admission.
The
Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory can be earned at both the masters
and at the doctoral level.
The
Certificate webpage: http://gradschool.binghamton.edu/ps/certificates.html
The
Graduate Certificate can be earned at the MS or Ph.D. level
Requirements
at the master's level: The masters level graduate certificate in Feminist
Theory consists of three graduate courses in feminist theory.
Of
these:
-
No
more than one can be generated by the student's home department or program,
and
-
One
must specifically address feminist theory in its relationship to women's
social movements. The master's level certificate is available only to students
who are not continuing on to earn a doctoral degree at Binghamton University.
Requirements
at the doctoral level: Beyond course work that is required at the masters
level, students pursuing the certificate at the doctoral level must
-
complete
at least one graduate course in an area that is relevant to Women's Studies
and
-
Write
a doctoral thesis in which some aspect of Feminist Theory is applied and/or
developed. Doctoral students who come to Binghamton with a masters degree
can use some of the appropriate courses that they took in their masters
programs to meet the four course requirement.
A
student in the Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory program can petition
the Women's Studies Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory committee to
substitute requirements and course work for those specified here.
Although
it is not a condition for the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate
in Feminist Theory, students in the program are strongly encouraged to
attend its colloquia and workshops.

Notes
-
A
course in feminist theory can originate in any discipline or be interdisciplinary
in its orientation.
-
The
requirement for a course that addresses feminist theory in the context
of movements can be satisfied only by courses that place theoretical material
contextually using historical, sociological, and political analyses and
original as well as secondary sources. For a course of this kind it is
important to bring out the situational circumstances of theoretical developments
and the relationship of theory and practice.
-
Of
the three course requirements at the master's level or four at the doctoral
level one course can address theoretically issues or questions important
to feminism not necessarily from a feminist perspective. Issues and questions
of this kind are those addressed, for example, by Marxist/socialist theorists,
critical race theorists, queer theorists, or postcolonial theorists. Students
should add an explanatory note to their application in case they want to
include such a course.
